Hertzsprung-Russell diagram

Why is the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram important to astronomy?

  • It explains star evolution, stages, types, color, temperatures, and sizes. It's important for us to know the life cycle so we can prepare for when the star is going to die

What are the two qualities of a star does the HR diagram measure, and how does the diagram do this?

  • The HR measures the luminosity and the temperature

Where on the diagram would our sun be found?
